Tigers run away in the second half to drop Southwestern 69-47

Marshalltown, IA—Limiting the Southwestern Community College Spartans to just two points in a stretch of 13:54, the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team was able to run away from their opponents to pick up a 69-47 win at the Student Activity Center on Wednesday. Five players reached double-figures, led by Birana McGinty's (Milwaukee, WI/Bradley Tech) 14 off the bench.

Leading 31-21 at halftime, the Tigers opened up the second half on a 19-2 run to leave behind any doubt of a Spartan comeback. Five different players contributed to the run to help MCC improve to 7-4 on the year. Southwestern falls to 1-10.

Joining McGinty in double-digits was Sammie Sproul (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo West) with 12, one off of her career-high, JeAnn Hiraldo (Ames, IA/Ames) with 11, and Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) and Courtney Williams-Perry (Milwaukee, WI/Bradley Tech) with 10 each.

Hiraldo recorded her third double-double of the year with a game-high 13 rebounds off the bench. Sproul dished out a game-high seven assists to go along with five rebounds and three steals. The Tigers assisted on 20 of the team's 28 field goals.

The Tigers were unable to shake the Spartans early in the first half as Southwestern led 15-10 at the 11:18 mark. The Spartans maintained their lead until McGinty drained a three to tie the game at 21. MCC closed out the half on a 13-0 run.

MCC continued its streak entering the second and extended its lead to 17 after a Howe jumper at the 14:04 mark. The Tigers held their opponent to just one field goal over the final 4:19 to take the win.

The Tigers hit the road for the remainder of the first half of the season, starting a four game road trip at Kirkwood Community College on Dec. 13.
