Women's basketball loses in overtime to Ellsworth

The Tigers Women's Basketball team lost an overtime contest on Wednesday, February 3rd to Ellsworth, after Victaeja Leavy's three pointer with time running down gave the Panthers an 86 to 83 advantage. 

The Tigers would get two looks to score late and a missed 3-point attempt by Eva Zaragoza sealed the victory for the Panthers, their first win since February 17th 2018. The Tigers got out to an outstanding 48 to 34 halftime lead before being outscored by the Panthers 43 to 28 in the second half and were outscored 9 to 6 in the overtime period. The Tigers seemed to be coming out of there recent cold slump of 3 point shooting in the first half, but then seemed to go cold in the second half. MCC had a boost from Nuria Castillo who scored 17 points in the first half, but only scored 2 points the rest of the contest. The Panthers received huge contributions from their sophomores Keara Williams who finished with 25 points and 11 assists and Ellie Barrows who scored 17 and was 5 of 12 from the 3-point arc. 

The Tigers' starters played most of the contest and were key contributors in keeping MCC in the game. Eva Zaragoza, who made big plays late in the game to keep the Tigers a float, finished the contest with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. The New Zealand duo of Waiaaria Rogers and Heeni Blakey played key roles both finishing with 17 points each, with Blakey adding 4 assists and Rogers adding 3 assists and 2 steals. Castillo, as mentioned earlier, finished with 19 points and also added 8 rebounds and 2 steals in the loss. Carla Dorta Perez finished the contest with 7 assists.

The Tigers are at home on Saturday, February 6th, when they host the 2-3 Iowa Central Tritons with tip-off at 1 pm.
