Slow second half dooms Tiger women vs Iowa Central

The Marshalltown Community College Women's basketball team traveled to Iowa Central on Feb. 20 and fell to the Tritons 72-61. MCC had an all-around great effort with three players in double figures.

Solid play from the MCC starters would push the Tigers out to a 21-18 first quarter lead before being outscored by the Tritons 20 to 15 in the second quarter. The Tigers found themselves down two points at the half after a big shot from Nuria Castillo. It would end up being another sloppy second half of turnovers and missed shots for the Tigers that would ultimately lead to the Tritons getting out to a 10 point lead. The closest the Tiger women could get was within 6 points.

The Tigers were able to slow down the Triton's two leading. Isabell West finished with a 10 point 11 rebound double-double and Nevaeh Galloway with only 4 points. It was solid production from Carley West and Nevaeh Moeschter that would doom the Tigers with West getting 19 points and Moeschter scoring a season-high 17.

MCC got a solid performance from their starting unit who scored 59 of the Tigers 61 points. They were led in scoring by Carolina Rodriquez-Sanchez who finished with a season and career high 16 points while also bringing down 12 rebounds. Solid contributions from the sophomore duo of Eva Zaragoza and Nuria Castillo who played big roles in the contest with Zaragoza finishing with 14 points and Castillo with 13 and both players adding 7 rebounds as well.

Also contributing in a major role was Carla Dorta-Perez who had 9 points in the game and added 10 assists, which is the most assists by a Tiger player since the 2017-2018 season when Claudia Morente had 12 assists and 10 assist games. Playing through early foul trouble, Heeni Blakey finished with 7 points and was a big contributor late in the game with Castillo.

The Tiger Women play at home on Tuesday, Feb. 23, when they welcome the Ellsworth Panthers who beat the Tigers 86 to 83 in Iowa Falls earlier in the season. Tip-off will be at 5 pm.
