Holtz achieves Division I goal, signs with South Dakota State

Logan Holtz of the Marshalltown Community College Baseball team has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

Holtz recently wrapped up his two-year career at MCC, guiding the Tigers to their most successful season in program history. An integral part of the team's 34 wins in 2016, Holtz was a two-time All-Region XI selection, including a first-team honoree as a sophomore.

Holtz's aspirations of becoming a Division I athlete were reached with his commitment to the Jackrabbits. "Signing with South Dakota State gives me the chance to play at the Division I level," Holtz stated. "I loved the campus, the people, and the coaching staff. I am very excited to go there."

After a standout freshman season at MCC, Holtz upped his performance as a sophomore, boasting a .382 batting average after collecting 71 hits. In his final season as a Tiger, Holtz eclipsed the 100-hit milestone, finishing his career with 121 knocks while playing in 102 games. Holtz belted nine home runs while driving in 41 runs during his sophomore campaign.

"MCC allowed me to become a better player because we worked so much on every aspect of the game, all of the time," Holtz added. "We played a lot of potential Division I players which was a lot of fun to face that kind of competition. I'd like to thank the whole coaching staff and this year's team on gelling together and giving MCC its best season yet. The coaches always had our backs and so did the players."

Holtz described his time at Marshalltown as a memorable experience. "When you have teammates and coaches like I did, it allows you to love the game that much more. I loved everything about Marshalltown- the school, the people, and the team."

MCC head coach Rich Grife described Holtz's tenure at MCC as one of the best two-year stretches during his time as a coach. "Logan is one of the best hitters that has come through Marshalltown, and that's evident by his numbers. He improved tremendously since he stepped foot on campus and has worked extremely hard to achieve his goal of signing with a Division I school. South Dakota State is lucky to have a player like Logan Holtz join their program."

South Dakota State, members of the Summit League, reached the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and have posted 30-plus wins in a season in two of the last four years. The Jackrabbits have been coached by Dave Schrage for the past five seasons.

Holtz intends to study Construction Management at South Dakota Stae.
