Luiz Santos joins fellow Tigers in professional ranks

For the third in the last two months, a former member of the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team has signed a professional contract. Former power forward Luiz Paulo Dos Santos signed with Liga Sorocabana de Basquete (LSB) in Sorocaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, members of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB).

Santos, originally from Sao Paulo, played for the Tigers from 2009-2011. During his sophomore season, Santos appeared in 21 games for MCC, averaging 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds.

Following the two-year stint at MCC, Santos transferred to NCAA Division II institution Slippery Rock, members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Santos started 56 of his 58 career games for the Rock. Throughout his career at Slippery Rock, Santos averaged 6.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and blocked 73 shots while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor.

Santos was named PSAC Defensive Player of the Year for the 2012-13 season.

The LSB participates in the NBB, the premier professional men's basketball league in Brazil. The LSB finished as runners-up at the 2011 Super Copa Brasil.

Santos joins former MCC teammates Tyler Brown and Will Clyburn as past Tigers to ink professional deals this summer. Brown is currently a member of Cholet Basket of the ProA League in France while Clyburn signed with Ratiopharm Ulm of the Bundesliga in Germany.
