Members of the Marshalltown Community College men's and women's basketball team helped kick off the opening night of Oktemberfest in downtown Marshalltown.

Members of the Tigers' basketball teams opened up the night with a Zumba session with local youth in front of the town courthouse. Other activities included big wheel races and Little Mr. and Little Miss Oktemberfest and concluded with a children's fun run as the Tigers cheered on.

"It was a great opportunity to give back to the community that has supported our team," said men's head coach Brynjar Brynjarsson. "Our players understand without this support there wouldn't be the opportunity to be a student-athlete."

Jamal Gatali, a member of the men's basketball team was quoted in the Times Republican. "This is the community we play for in the school year, they come and support us during games, and they give us energy and help us with our games, it's great to give back."

The annual fall festival continues throughout the weekend and includes a carnival, concerts, a 5k/10k run/walk and a parade throughout downtown.
