Tigers knock off Spartans to pick up first win

After a great showing in the season opener, the Tiger men picked up their first win of the season by knocking off the Southwestern Spartans 63 to 49 on Saturday, Jan. 23rd.

It was a big win for the Tigers as the Spartans were coming off a victory over powerhouse Indian Hills in their season opener. The Tigers did not shoot particularly well in the game, shooting 39 percent from the field and 52 percent from the free-throw line, attempting 36 in the game. They lead at the half 28 to 24, and outscored the Spartans 35 to 25 in the second half, while getting a balanced attack from both the starters and bench.

The Tigers were lead in scoring by Deon'ta Lagway who finished with 16 on the day and added 7 rebounds to go along with 4 steals. The key contribution came from Lavarius Hampton who had 10 points off the bench played key minutes for the Tigers. Other big contributors were Ike Sheppard, Jaylin Scott, and David Roberts. Sheppard finished with 9 points, while Scott and Roberts finished with 7 each. Roberts also finished with 5 rebounds to go along with 3 steals.

The Tiger men are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 27th when they welcome ranked DMACC Bears to the Student Activity Center for a 7 pm tip.
