Marshalltown, IA—Holding its opposition to the lowest point total in 15 years, the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team ran away with a 104-35 victory at home against Graceland University JV on Wednesday night. 12 different Tigers scored in the win.
The 35 points allowed are the fewest for an opposing team against MCC dating back to the 2002-03 season. The 69 point victory ties a program mark that was set during the 2010-11 season.
Freshman Mohamed Thiam (Dekar, Senegal/Canarias) posted 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Souf Mensah (Nantes, France/Canarias) added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Tigers (9-2).
After taking a 39-18 lead at halftime, MCC upped its scoring in the second half behind a potent bench play. Berk Karadan (Izmir, Turkey/Izmir Zubeyde) went 5-6 from the floor to finish the night with 12 points and nine rebounds, both career-highs. Reggie Gradwell (Marshalltown, IA/West Marshall) caught fire in the second half and connected on six of eight shots, including 3-4 from three-point range to finish with 16 points.
Freshman Marquas Gafeney (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo East) made his first appearance of the season for the Tigers and contributed nine points and six assists while not committing a turnover in 13 minutes.
MCC totaled 64 rebounds in the win, a season-best. While the scoring was plentiful for the Tigers, MCC managed to protect the ball on the offensive end, committing just seven turnovers in the win, the lowest mark of the season.
MCC hosts Southwestern Community College at 7:00 PM on Dec. 7.
