Marshalltown, IA—Marquas Gafeney (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo East) put home a layup with 2.3 seconds on the clock to lift the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball varsity reserve team to a 45-44 victory over Cornell JV on Tuesday night at the Student Activity Center.

The Tigers trailed 44-37 with 1:26 to play in the game, but a last-ditch effort brought MCC to victory. Tony Smith's (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) three pulled the Tigers within three, 44-41 and Gafeney hit a running layup in the lane to cut the deficit to one with 26 seconds on the clock.

After a missed free throw from the Rams, the Tigers had one final chance to win the game. A Cornell foul led to an inbounds pass for the Tigers that saw Smith find a cutting Gafeney who hit the eventual game-winning layup for the victory. The shot is Gafeney's second game-winner of the season.

Danny Mozee (Louisville, KY/Louisville Male added nine points on three three-pointers for the Tigers while freshman Ashton Miller (Madison, WI/La Follette) pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds. Jonas Perkis (Trondheim, Norway/Charlottenlund VGS) added 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.

The Tiger defense forced 18 turnovers in the win while the offense committed just seven miscues.

The varsity reserve team has now won three games in a row and are 4-2 on the year. Tuesday's game marked the final game of the first semester for MCC.
