MCC Volleyball falls twice in season opener

Cedar Rapids, IA—The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team dropped its first two games of the 2015 season on Friday night, falling to Kirkwood Community College and Iowa Lakes Community College in straight sets. Three different players reached double-digits in the kill column.

Facing their first opponents of the year, the Tigers dropped three straight sets to Kirkwood-  25-11, 25-13, and 25-21. Freshman Nicole Montgomery (Beaman, IA/BCLUW) led the Tigers with seven kills while Raini Hilmer (Dysart, IA/Union) dished out 16 assists. Jordan Carter (Sigourney, IA/Sigourney) collected 12 digs in the opening loss.

In the nightcap, Iowa Lakes took three straight sets from the Tigers- 25-13, 25-12, 25-19. Carter provided a solid all-around performance for the Tigers, leading MCC with eight kills and 13 digs. Hilmer and Rieley Rodman (Ankeny, IA/Grand View Christian) also added 13 assists.

Montgomery finished the night with 11 kills, followed by 10 from both Carter and Alanna Dubberke (Cambridge, IA/Ballard). Hilmer posted a total of 32 assists in her collegiate debut.

MCC returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 PM match at Grinnell College.
