Streak reaches six as Tigers score two sweeps at NIACC

Mason City, IA—Freshman Meghann Cole (Des Moines, IA/West Des Moines Valley) powered the Marshalltown Community College women's volleyball team to a pair of 3-0 sweeps at the Trojan Volleyball Tournament at North Iowa Area Community College on Saturday morning, extending the Tigers' winning streak to six matches. MCC defeated Dakota County Technical College and closed out the day with a win over Central College JV.

Cole recorded double-digit kill totals in each match, 11 against Dakota County and 10 against Central College JV as the Tigers upped their overall record to 16-12, passing last year's win total of 14. MCC defeated Dakota County in straight sets, 25-8, 25-10, and 25-10 and defeated Central College JV for the second time in three days with scores of 25-11, 25-22, and 25-13.

The Tigers have won 16 games for just the second time since 2005 when MCC went 27-21, the program's last winning season. The 2010 team posted a record of 16-27. The Tigers have 11 regular season games remaining this year.

The Tigers rolled to a three-set win against the Blue Knights to open the day thanks to Cole's solid offensive performance. The freshman also served up a career-high seven service aces. Miranda Smith (Albion, IA/Marshalltown) contributed 10 kills while Reeba Box (Liscomb, IA/BCLUW) added eight.

Alyssa Whitmore (Legrand, IA/Marshalltown), making her second straight start as the team's libero after primary libero Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) suffered a shoulder injury Thursday night, tallied 15 digs in the match while adding three service aces.

Against Central College JV, Cole recorded her second straight double-digit kill total after recording just one double-digit total in her previous six matches. Smith added eight kills, giving her a team-leading 233 on the year, just ahead of Cole's 226.

Whitmore came up with a team-high 14 digs against the Dutch while Emily Anker (Earlham, IA/Earlham) registered 11 digs and Smith added 10.

Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) gave the Tigers a strong all-around effort on Saturday, totaling 58 assists, eight kills, two service aces and two blocks on the day.

MCC will look to continue its winning ways and improve on its Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) position in the standings as the Tigers travel to Ellsworth Community College for a conference showdown on Oct. 9 at 7:00 PM. MCC is currently tied for sixth place in the league standings with a 3-3 record. The Panthers are 1-5 in the ICCAC and 8-14 overall.
