Tigers finish fifth at HCC Classic

Freeport, IL—Four different Tigers scored in double figures as the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team finished fifth at the 48th annual William R. Bear Classic, hosted by Highland Community College, with a 91-74 victory over Iowa Central Community College on Saturday night.

The Tigers dropped the opening game of the weekend classic on Friday night but bounced back with a pair of wins on Saturday, dropping Bryant & Stratton College Saturday morning before taking down the Tritons in the nightcap. Mohamed Thiam (Dekar, Senegal/Canarias) posted a double-double while Floyd Preito (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) recorded a career-high 21 points. Brandon Simmons (Harlem, NY/Teaneck) matched his season-best with 20 points in the win.

After falling on Friday night, MCC opened up Saturday's action with an 85-68 victory over Bryant & Stratton College to advance.

The Tigers jumped out to a 46-39 halftime lead over the Tritons and outscored Iowa Central by 10 points in the final frame to improve to 11-4 on the year. MCC defeated the Tritons 76-56 in Fort Dodge, IA on Nov. 28.

Souf Mensah (Nantes, France/Canarias) added 15 points and seven assists for the Tigers on 7-11 shooting. As a team, MCC shot 52.2 percent (35-67) from the floor. The Tigers also took control of the rebounding game with a 41-38 advantage.

Next up for MCC is a trip to Iowa Lakes Community College for a 7:30 PM matchup on Dec. 14.
