Five players score as MCC rolls over Indian Hills 6-2

Ottumwa, IA—Sophomore Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) recorded six points to lead the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team to a 6-2 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory over Indian Hills Community College on the road Wednesday evening. The Tigers even their overall record to 3-3 and conference record to 1-1.

The six points tie a career-high for the reigning NJCAA All-American. Carrillo recorded five points on three occasions in 2013, including one goal and three assists against Indian Hills on Sept. 25. Carrillo recorded six points in a 6-1 win over Carl Sandburg on August 31 of this year. In three career games against Indian Hills, Carrillo has totaled 12 points (three goals, six assists).

Joining Carrillo in the scoring column were Celes Vilar (Las Palmas, Spain/San Antonio Maria Claret), his first of the season, and David Gomez (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown), DJ Fluey (Baine, MN/Spring Lake Park), and Carlos Smith (Des Moines, IA/East), the second of each freshman's career.

Carrillo opened up the scoring in the 10th minute after corralling a loose ball from close-range to bury his sixth goal of the year. Carrillo teamed up with fellow Spaniard Vilar just five minutes later to double the Tigers' lead. MCC took the 2-0 advantage into halftime.

Just six minutes into the second frame, the Warriors cut the deficit in half with a goal, but the game would not get any closer as Vilar was on the receiving end of a free kick from Lino Estevez (Vigo, Spain/I.E.S. San Paio) just seven minutes later for the Tigers' third goal of the match. Estevez leads the Tigers with five assists on the year

Carrillo and freshman Charles Huberty (Champlin, MN/Prairie Seeds) teamed up on the far side of the field that led to a cross into the box and found the foot of Gomez to put MCC up 4-1. Carrillo and Austin See (Nevada, IA/Nevada) combined to assist on Fluey's goal in the 73rd minute.

In the final minute of play, Smith forced a turnover deep in the Warriors' zone and capped off the MCC scoring after beating the Indian Hills goalie one-on-one.

Kwan Tolbert (Conway, AR/Conway) played 80 minutes in net to earn the win for the Tigers, the third of his career. The freshman stopped five shots for the Tigers. Andrew Waterfall (Brandon, SD/Brandon Valley) stopped one shot in relief.

In their last three meetings, all MCC wins, the Tigers have outscored the Warriors 19-2.

MCC returns home on Sept. 13 to host Iowa Central Community College in conference action at 2:00 PM.
