Tigers pitch conference shutout at Scott

Bettendorf, IA—A second consecutive grueling road trip proved to be no trouble at all for the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team as the Tigers dropped Scott Community College 4-0 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play on Saturday. Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) tallied five points on the afternoon.

Coming off of a hard-fought 1-0 overtime victory at Iowa Lakes Community College on Tuesday, the Tigers (5-4-0, 3-2-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Eagles (0-7-0, 0-4-0) in the first 25 minutes of action as Carrillo netted the opener and Celes Vilar (Las Palmas, Spain/San Antonio Maria Claret) doubled the lead moments later. The Tigers extended their lead in the second half as Noe Gomez (Bloomington, MN/John F. Kennedy) recorded his first-career goal. Carrillo capped off the scoring with a goal in the 89th minute.

The Tiger offense produced a season-high 29 shots, including 13 on net.  MCC also earned 11 corner kicks on the afternoon, all coming in the first half.

Kwan Tolbert (Conway, AR/Conway) was not tested in 80 minutes of action, but earned the win in net. Julian Pena (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine) finished off the match to combine for the Tigers' second straight shutout.

MCC opened up the scoring in the 20th minute as Carrillo corralled a long pass from sophomore defender Jordan Gilmore (Portadown, UK/Craigavon). Carrillo was able to beat the Scott goalie one-on-one to put the Tigers on the board. Five minutes later, Carrillo played a through ball to the middle of the field, finding the foot of Vilar who buried a shot to double the lead.

The score remained 2-0 to open the second half until Gomez was awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute. The sophomore defender converted the shot for the first points of his Tiger career. In the 89th minute, Carrillo and Vilar switched roles as Vilar played a ball to Carrillo who fired from 10 yards out to complete the scoring.

The Tigers return home for a 4:00 PM matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 24 against ICCAC opponent North Iowa Area Community College.
