Vilar's overtime winner lifts MCC at Iowa Lakes

Estherville, IA—Celes Vilar (Las Palmas, Spain/San Antonio Maria Claret) scored his first career game-winning goal in the 97th minute to lift the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team to a 1-0 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory at Iowa Lakes Community College on Tuesday. With the win, the Tigers improve to 4-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in league play.

Coming off a heartbreaking loss in the final minutes to conference rival Iowa Central Community College on Saturday, Vilar proved to be the man of the match with his goal seven minutes into the extra session. The sophomore teamed up with forward Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) for a series of passes inside the Lakers' box. Vilar was able to beat two opposing defenders and fired a shot into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Vilar's goal was the second of the season for the midfielder, doubling his total from a year ago. The sophomore finished with five shots. Carrillo's assist moves him into a tie for fourth-place in career assists.

Kwan Tolbert (Conway, AR/Conway) kept the Tigers alive throughout the match, stopping six shots on the day. The freshman keeper denied several quality chances from the Lakers. The shutout is the first of Tolbert's young career.

MCC improves to 9-0-0 all-time against Iowa Lakes, dating back to 2010. The Tigers have allowed just five goals in the series.

The Tigers remain on the road with a conference match at Scott Community College at 12:00 PM on Sept. 20.
