Soccer remains in national polls for second straight week

Despite a weekend loss, the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team remained in the national rankings for the second consecutive week. The Tigers received votes in the NJCAA Division I Poll and are ranked No. 16 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Junior College Division I Poll.

The Tigers (10-5-0, 6-3-0) posted a 1-1 record last week, defeating Indian Hills Community College 3-1 at home on Tuesday and falling 2-1 to Iowa Central Community College on the road on Saturday. The Tigers were ranked No. 16 in the NJCAA poll last week and No. 12 in the previous NSCAA poll.

MCC took down Indian Hills behind goals from Eniz Smajlovic (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny), Charles Huberty (Champlin, MN/Prairie Seeds), and Agustin Ortiz (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) for the team's second win over the Warriors this year.

In MCC's second meeting of the year against Iowa Central, the Tigers were minutes away from defeating the Tritons, only to see Iowa Central tie the game at one in the 88th minute. A goal in eighth minute of overtime sunk the Tigers 2-1.

Iowa Western Community College, regained the top spot in both polls after spending the previous week at No. 2. The Reivers are in first place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), 2.5 games ahead of MCC. The Tigers are one full game ahead of Iowa Central (5-9-0, 5-4-0) in the league standings.

MCC hosts Iowa Lakes Community College in ICCAC action at 4:00 PM on Oct. 15. The Tigers defeated the Lakers 1-0 in their previous meeting on Sept. 16.
