Offense stalls as Tigers fall twice to Iowa Western

UPDATE: The MCC Softball team has postponed its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Indian Hills Community College with a makeup date to be determined.

Marshalltown, IA—The Marshalltown Community College Softball team dropped a pair of games to Iowa Western Community College on Friday afternoon in the team's opening Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) contests. The Tigers fell in game one 13-0 and 13-3 in game two.

MCC (13-6/0-2) struggled offensively throughout the day, managing just one hit in the opener. The offense found life late in game two, but the Reivers (20-15/2-0) had already pulled away for the afternoon sweep.

Iowa Western scored two first inning runs on a two-run home run, but freshman Jordan Carter (Sigourney, IA/Sigourney) limited the opposition and held the Reivers scoreless over the next three frames. Iowa Western's bats woke up in the fifth inning and erupted for 11 runs to pull away for the run-rule shortened contest. Courtney Fudge (Pleasant Hill, IA/Des Moines East) collected the lone hit for the Tigers.

The Reivers pulled away early in game two, building a 9-0 lead through three innings. MCC managed to put three runs on the board in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI-single from Kari Smith (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) and a two-run double from Fudge. Iowa Western held off the Tigers the rest of the way.

Freshman Josie Carpenter (Wapello, IA/Wapello) joined Smith with two hits each in the game as the Tigers put eight knocks in the scorebook. Freshman Paige Taylor (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) struck out eight batters in the loss.
