Home runs carry softball to split with MCC-Maple Woods

Marshalltown, IA—After dropping the opening game of the day 5-1, the Marshalltown Community College Softball team rallied for a 7-1 victory over visiting MCC-Maple Woods at home on Tuesday afternoon. The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Tigers.

The Tigers used a pair of early home runs in game two to pull away from the Monarchs. Sophomore Taylor Anderson (San Antonio, TX/Churchill) connected on a two-run home run in the first inning to score Courtney Fudge (Pleasant Hill, IA/Des Moines East). Fudge provided the next big strike in the second inning with a grand slam to put the Tigers ahead 6-0 early on.

Jordan Carter's (Sigourney, IA/Sigourney sacrifice fly in the sixth inning scored Lexie Valentine (Des Moines, IA/Saydel) capped the scoring for the Tigers.

Fudge finished the game with a pair of hits to go along with the four RBI and two runs scored. Paige Taylor (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) limited the Monarchs offensively, tossing seven innings, allowing just four hits to earn her team-leading seventh win of the season. Taylor struck out six batters in the win to give her an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) best 87 strikeouts on the season.

The Monarchs used the long-ball in game one to drop the Tigers, using a pair of late-game home runs to pull away.  

Sophomore Sarah Ghee (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) delivered a triple and later scored for the Tiger's only run. Anderson and Carter both added hits in the loss for MCC.

The Tigers head to Des Moines Area Community College for a nonconference doubleheader Thursday afternoon, set for a 2:00 PM start.
