Early deficits plague softball at Southwestern

Creston, IA—The Marshalltown Community College Softball team dropped a pair of games on the road to Southwestern Community College on Monday afternoon, falling 5-3 in the opener and 9-2 in game two. The Tigers fall to 16-13 overall on the year.

The Spartans slowly built its lead over the Tigers, scoring one run in each of the first three innings while holding MCC scoreless. An RBI-double from Courtney Fudge (Pleasant Hill, IA/Des Moines East) scored Lauren Wolfe (Miles City, MT/Custer County) for the team's first run in the fifth inning to pull within two, but Southwestern added two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Trailing 5-1, MCC threatened in the seventh inning as Lexie Valentine (Des Moines, IA/Saydel) and Rieley Rodman (Ankeny, IA/Grand View Christian) both scored for the Tigers. Kari Smith (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) and Sarah Ghee (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) both reached base but were left stranded to end the game.

Freshman Paige Taylor (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) had another strong showing in the circle for MCC, striking out nine batters in the loss. Taylor struck out nine batters while just three runs were earned.

MCC fell behind early in game two after a five-run second inning from the Spartans. The Tigers scored two runs in the fifth only to see the home team add four runs over the next two frames.
