Tigers erupt for six goals over visiting Grand View

Marshalltown, IA—The Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team used an array of scorers on Sunday night to score a 6-0 victory over visiting Grand View JV. Five different players netted a goal for the Tigers, including two from freshman John Krause (Slater, IA/Ballard). With the win, MCC improves to 2-0 on the year.

The Tigers built an early 2-0 lead over the Vikings to set the tone for the game. Juan Carillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) and Roberto Velazquez (San Antonio, TX/Ronald Reagan) scored within 1:05 of each other to boost the offense. Krause scored less than five minutes after Velazquez to give MCC a 3-0 lead midway through the first half. The Tigers controlled a 3-0 halftime lead before adding a trio of goals in the second half to seal the victory.

Freshman goalie Julian Pena (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine) picked up his second victory to open his collegiate career. Pena made one save on the night in just under 60 minutes of action.

Carillo's goal came at the 15:37 mark of the first half on an assist from Velazquez. Following a shot from Velazquez, Carillo positioned himself in front of the net to bury the rebound and pick up his first goal of his collegiate career. At the 16:42 mark Velazquez was on the receiving end of a long through ball from defenseman Bill Baye (Crystal, MN/Park Center). Velazquez was able to corral the ball and beat the goalie one-on-one for the game's second goal.

Krause put the Tigers up 3-0 after receiving a long outlet pass from Pena. The freshman beat the back line and scored his first collegiate goal.

Ralph Duopu (Crystal, MN/Armstrong) opened up the scoring in the second half for MCC, scoring on a cross from Marquel Comer (Tallahassee, FL/Lincoln) at the 59:06 mark. Krause scored his second goal of the game after collecting his own rebound in the 78th minute. MCC's final goal came from Marcus Boehler (Virginia Beach, VA/Nile C. Kinnick) in the 85th minute. Baye placed a pass over the top of the Grand View defense, hitting Boehler in stride who finished with a right-footed shot.

The Tigers controlled the game in every statistical category, outshooting the Vikings 24-6, 19 of those coming on net.

Dating back to last season, the Tigers have posted shutouts in four of their last five matches.

MCC will host Cloud County Community College at 4:00 PM on August 28. The Thunderbirds won the NJCAA Division I National Championship in 2011.
