Tigers roll over Indian Hills with season-high 10 goals

Ottumwa, IA—An offensive outburst propelled the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team to a 10-0 road victory against Indian Hills Community College on Wednesday afternoon, giving the Tigers their fourth straight Iowa Valley Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory. MCC improves to 8-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in league play.

The Tigers, who entered the day in the Receiving Votes category in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, erupted for 10 goals against IHCC, the most an MCC squad has scored since the 2009 season where the Tigers scored 11 against Scott Community College. MCC was led by Jose Gomez (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) who recorded his first-career hat-trick, tallying two goals in the second half. Hernan Lopez (Muskego, WI/Muskego) netted two goals while Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) registered three assists and added a penalty kick goal in the 75th minute.

Wednesday's game saw much more offense compared to the 2012 season when the two teams combined for a total of eight goals in two games. The Tigers pulled out a 3-2 victory in overtime on Sept. 25 but IHCC ended the Tigers' regular season with a 2-1 victory on Oct. 20.

Sophomore captain Ralph Duopu (Crystal, MN/Armstrong) opened up the scoring with a goal in the 13th minute on an assist from Carrillo. Marcus Boehler (Virginia Beach, VA/Nile C. Kinnick) tallied his second goal of the season late in the second half while Gomez started his scoring in the 44th minute as the Tigers went into halftime leading 3-0.

The offense took off in the second half as John Krause (Slater, IA/Ballard) scored just two minutes into the half. Lopez was responsible for the next two scores, coming just five minutes apart.

Gomez scored his second goal in the 73rd minute while Carrillo joined in on the scoring with his second penalty kick of the year two minutes later. Andy Valett, returning from a six game absence due to an injury, scored his first goal of the season in the 78th minute. Gomez capped off the scoring for the Tigers in the 81st minute on an assist from Duopu, his second of the game.

Chester Killen (Brooklyn Park, MN/Park Center) picked up his first points of his MCC career, registering two second half assists.

Julian Pena (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine) and Andrew Waterfall (Brandon, SD/Brandon Valley) split time in net for the Tigers to combine for the team's fourth shutout of the year. Pena earned the win while Waterfall stopped three second half shots.

The Tigers game against Minnesota International on Saturday has been cancelled. MCC resumes conference play with a home match against Iowa Central on Oct. 1 at 4:00 PM at MCC.
