MCC climbs in national polls for third straight week

NSCAA Division I Poll            NJCAA Division I Poll

After a 2-0 week in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play, the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team moved up in both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and NJCAA Division I polls. The Tigers enter this week ranked No. 15 in the NSCAA poll and No. 18 in the NJCAA poll.

MCC jumped one spot in each poll after coming in last week at No. 16 in the NSCAA poll and No. 19 in the NJCAA poll. The Tigers have been ranked inside the top 20 or received votes in seven of the eight weeks for each poll, with this week's ranking of No. 15 the highest the team has received this year. The Tigers have moved up in the rankings each of the last three weeks.

Last week the Tigers scored a 2-1 conference victory over North Iowa Area Community College on Tuesday. Freshman Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) scored both goals for MCC with the game-winner coming with just under eight minutes remaining in the game.

MCC posted its third shutout in four games on Saturday as the Tigers dropped Indian Hills 3-0 to improve to 9-2-0 in league play and 13-3-1 overall. Goals were scored by Hernan Lopez (Muskegon, WI/Muskegon), Chester Killen (Brooklyn Park, MN/Park Center) and Bill Baye (Crystal, MN/Park Center).

MCC is currently riding a four-game winning streak that has seen the Tigers surrender just one goal. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 28-3 over the team's last seven matches.

With one conference game remaining, the Tigers currently sit in second place in the ICCAC. MCC will travel to Iowa Central on Saturday for the regular season finale. The Tigers, who defeated Iowa Central at home 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 1, sit 1.5 games ahead of the Tritons in the league standings.

Fellow ICCAC member Iowa Western continues to be ranked No. 1 in both polls with a record of 16-0-0.
