Shirley inks first softball signee in BCLUW's Kayla Fisher

New Marshalltown Community College head softball coach Garland Shirley has hit the ground running in the recruiting game, signing local product Kayla Fisher to a National Letter of Intent. Fisher is a graduate of BCLUW High School.

"Kayla comes from a program of strong tradition in BCLUW," said Shirley. "They have produced some great players and Kayla has been a part of very successful teams. She is a smart player who has been calling pitches for quite some time and will provide depth at the catching position for us."

Fisher appeared in all 29 games for the Comets in 2015, a team that went 20-9 on the year, winning nine of the team's final 11 games. Fisher played a pivotal role throughout the infield for BCLUW, spending a majority of the time behind the plate. Fisher, who will be enrolling in the Nursing degree program at MCC, saw the Marshalltown campus as a perfect fit for multiple reasons.

"When deciding on a college, everything just fell in to place with MCC," stated Fisher. "It had my major, it was close to home, and I had the chance to play softball."

As a senior for the Comets, Fisher collected 24 hits and drove in 15 runs at the plate.

"After finishing my high school career, I'm really excited to get back in to the team atmosphere. We had great team bonding in high school and I look forward to having that again at Marshalltown."

When focusing on the transition from high school softball to the college ranks, Fisher welcomes the opportunity. "I believe I'll be able to handle the switch very well. I know I have to put the work in and keep everything in line in terms of academics. Softball is a privilege and I look forward to the opportunity."

While at BCLUW, Fisher spent time on the Comets' volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, and cross country teams.

Shirley, who was hired on June 4, makes Fisher his first official signee at MCC.
