Softball suffers setback at Iowa Western

Council Bluffs, IA—The Marshalltown Community College softball team fell in its opening Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon to Iowa Western Community College. The Tigers fell in game one 8-0 and dropped game two 15-7.

The Tigers managed just two hits in the opener, a pair of fourth inning singles from Dion Shirley (Van Meter, IA/Van Meter) and Shaena Robinson (Gardnerville, NV/Douglas). MCC threatened with a bases loaded opportunity in the frame but failed to capitalize as the Reivers ran away with the opener.

Robinson extended her hitting streak to 20 games in the first inning of game two with an RBI double to score Courtney Fudge (Pleasant Hill, IA/Des Moines East). Iowa Western plated nine runs for a big first inning, but the Tigers stayed within reach with a four-run second. Fudge used a two-run double in the inning to lift the offense.

Iowa Western jumped ahead with a 13-5 lead through three innings. Robinson added another run-scoring base hit in the fourth, but the Tigers could not overcome the early deficit.

Robinson upped her batting average to a nation-best .582 after collecting a hit in both games, extending her streak to every game this season. MCC collected 10 hits in game two, the 11th time this season the Tigers have reached double-digit hits.

The Tigers host Iowa Central Community College on Thursday afternoon for a nonconference doubleheader at 2:00 PM.
