Women's Basketball falls in season opener

Moberly, MO—Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) netted a team-high 17 points for the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team, but the Tigers dropped its opening game of the year to St. Louis Community College, 83-70 in the Comfort Inn/Pizza Hut Classic. Howe was one of three players to reach double-figures on the day.

Howe went 7-12 from the floor and connected on all three free throw attempts to pace the Tigers. Freshman JeAnn Hiraldo (Ames, IA/Ames) opened her collegiate career with 14 points on 6-12 shooting, including one three-point shot. Kaleigh Sieck (Toledo, IA/South Tama), returning from a knee injury suffered during the 2013-14 season, drained three three-point shots en route to 12 points on the afternoon.

The Tigers held an early 17-11 advantage in the first half, but failed to hit a field goal for nearly four minutes as the Archers bounced back to take a 28-21 lead. St. Louis went into halftime leading 41-38.

MCC hit just one field goal in the first five minutes of the second half as the Archers built their lead up to double-digits. The Tigers made a late push as Sieck scored seven points down the stretch, but the Archers held on for the victory.

The Tigers will take on host Moberly Area Community College in the final game of the classic at 5:00 PM tomorrow.
