Marshalltown, IA—The Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team struggled all night from the floor, leading the Tigers to a 57-42 loss at the hands of John Wood Community College at the Student Activity Center. Wednesday night's game was Play 4 Kay night with all proceeds donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
The Tigers posted a 28.6 percentage from the floor and finished the night just 4-27 from three-point range. Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) led all scorers with 13 points. JeAnn Hiraldo (Ames, IA/Ames) added 12 points paired with nine rebounds and six steals. Sammie Sproul (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo West) scored 10 points along with seven assists and four steals.
Hiraldo connected on a pair of free throws at the 10:05 mark of the first half to tie the game at eight, but the offense went cold and MCC failed to score for the next 9:43. Despite the poor offensive output, the Tigers trailed just 14-8 until Sproul knocked down a three-point shot to claw back within three. Sproul drained another three just before the halftime buzzer to keep the Tigers afloat, but John Wood led 21-17 at the break.
Sproul carried the hot hand into the second half, hitting her third three-point shot of the night for the Tigers' first points of the final frame. The Blazers pulled ahead, but a Howe jumper brought MCC back within five, 36-31 with 10:37 to play.
MCC's offense went back to its woeful ways as John Wood put together a 9-0 furry to run away with the nonconference win. The Tigers fall to 15-12 on the year while John Wood improves to 19-6.
The Tigers wrap up their conference schedule with a home game against Northeast Community College at 5:00 PM on Saturday night. The MCC men's basketball team will take on the Hawks at 7:00 PM.
