Tigers take two at Southwestern CC

Creston, IA—Alanna Dubberke (Cambridge, IA/Ballard) and Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) teamed up for 31 kills while Kayla Prosser (Eldora, IA/South Hardin) posted 18 in one match to lead the Marshalltown Community College volleyball team to two shutout wins at Southwestern Community College on Friday night.

The Tigers opened up with a 3-0 win against Highland Community College, winning all three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-23, and 25-11. MCC closed out the night with a second sweep of the host Spartans, 25-19, 25-20, and 25-23 to improve to 17-23 on the year.

Hinrichs and Dubberke provided the hot hand on the attacking end of the ball against Highland, combining for 21 kills with just one error in 29 attempts. Dubberke's 11 kills are a career-high for the freshman. Hinrichs also dished out 24 assists to go along with 11 digs in the match. Five different Tigers recorded at least 10 digs in the win. Prosser collected five service aces to pace MCC.

As a team, the Tigers hit .324 on the night, the team's third best total of the year.

In the nightcap, the Tigers held off Southwestern in each set as the Spartans inched closer in every game, but MCC outlasted the hosts in the long run. The Tigers' hitting percentage dropped against the Spartans, but Prosser heated up with 18 kills for a .378 hitting percentage.

Hinrichs upped her total to 28 assists in the win while Reeba Box (Liscomb, IA/BCLUW) recorded a team-best 23 digs in the triumph.

Next up for the Tigers will be the Des Moines Area Community College Tournament on Oct. 31. MCC will play Iowa Central Community College and Kirkwood Community College.
