No. 4 Kirkwood buries MCC 78-49

Cedar Rapids, IA—Facing its second top-five ranked team in the last four days, the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team suffered its third straight loss as the Tigers fell 78-49 to No. 4 Kirkwood Community College. The Tigers fall to 10-4 overall and 1-3 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play.

Courtney Williams-Perry (Milwaukee, WI/Bradley Tech), this week's ICCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week provided another strong performance in the rebounding column as the freshman pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds for her third double-digit rebounding effort in the last four games. Over the four-game stretch, Williams-Perry is averaging 12.75 rebounds per contest.

Mackenzie Gott (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa) and Jamerka Martin (Milwaukee, WI/Rufus King) each scored 14 points to lead the way for MCC while Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) chipped in 11 points. Gott also pulled down 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.

Howe hit the game's first shot, a three-pointer to give the Tigers the initial lead. Martin knocked a three at the 15:12 mark to put MCC up 9-7 and a layup from Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) just over a minute later gave MCC an 11-9 advantage. The lead was short-lived though as the Eagles (14-3, 3-1) went on a quick 10-0 run.

Following a three from Martin and a layup from Gott, Kirkwood went on a 15-2 run to close out the half and went into halftime leading 34-18.

Gott scored the first six points of the second half for the Tigers but Kirkwood was able to answer every shot as the Eagles built a 20-point lead in the opening minutes of the second frame. The Tigers hit just one field goal over the final 8:25 of the game as MCC fell to its third straight ranked opponent.

The Tigers' 49 points were a season-low while MCC shot just 24.1 percent from the floor, also its lowest mark of the year.

MCC will host Des Moines Area Community College at 1:00 PM on Saturday afternoon at the Student Activity Center.
