Tigers drop to fifth place with 63-47 loss at DMACC

Boone, IA—The Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team suffered a 63-47 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) loss to Des Moines Area Community College on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers fall one game behind the Bears for fifth place in the conference standings.

The loss drops MCC to 7-6 overall while DMACC jumps up to the fourth spot in the ICCAC with an 8-5 record. The Tigers, who defeated the Bears 68-67 on Jan. 11, have now lost three straight games to send them to fifth place with three league games to go in the regular season. The Bears have rattled off four straight wins of their own.

Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) scored a team-high 16 points on the day to go along with five assists. The sophomore has recorded seven straight games of at least 10 points and five assists. Mackenzie Gott (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa) scored seven points to go along with nine rebounds. As a team, the Tigers shot just 29.5 percent from the floor and went just 2-15 from three-point range.

MCC hung with the Bears early on but DMACC controlled the lead in the opening minutes. The Tigers held their opponent to just four points over a four minute stretch midway through the second half, but scored just four points themselves. MCC failed to score over the final three minutes of play in the first half as DMACC went into halftime with a 37-25 advantage.

DMACC extended its lead to 20 points in the opening minutes of the second half and held onto the margin until the closing minutes. The lead was too large for MCC to overcome, even with its' 9-0 run over the final five minutes of the game.

The Tigers travel to Iowa Lakes Community College on Wednesday night in an ICCAC matchup. The Lakers are currently in the ninth and final spot in the conference with a 2-11 record.
